The 1200 is the best model to start with nowadays as it's the easiest to communicate with from a PC. The 500 is something to get later, when you'll be able to recreate your own floppies, or if you want to invest in a floppy drive emulator. Please, if you replace your A500 floppy unit with an HxC, don't trash the drive, keep it or sell it if you don't need it, but please don't trash it, they're not so easy to find, and for all those people who get a hard-on for old machines that are untouched, it's pretty useful to have spare drives.
Also, on a 1200, the PAL or NTSC signal is set software-side.
