I'd recommend starting with the classic series. If you love 1, move on to the spectacular 3 afterward. If 1 kicks your ass, try 4 instead. If you're cruising through the classics, don't forget to try Rondo and Bloodlines.

2 is alright, but it's not for everyone. It's like an early attempt at what SotN and later games do more in depth.

For the first few non-retro ones: Circle of the Moon is a great bridge between classic and exploration. Harmony of Dissonance is alright, but it's too easy. Aria of Sorrow has an excellent balance of variety and challenge.
