Not really limitations. Maybe just having to work within the SNES aspect ratio. Like image related, comparing MKII MD/ Genesis with SNES versions, and the SNES version has skinnier sprites that balloon out when in 4:3.

here's a little comparison that I made showing the differences between the SNES and mega Drive/ Genesis resolutions using Mortal Kombat II. The devs for the SNES game had to make their sprites skinnier horizontally to fill out the 8:7 aspect ratio to 4:3. Genesis/ Mega Drive comes close to 4:3 before upscale, but not quite. Bit extended colour pallete on the SNES does make a difference. Genesis/ Mega Drive sprites are actually higher resolution and look better overall. Both versions have their ups and downs.
