On my first playthrough I never used 4th D-Slip because I thought it was like running, that is, not 100% effective. But it is 100% effective. Also on my first playthrough I completely missed the deep sea fish boss, so I never got the onyx hook.
On my 2nd playthorugh I made sure to get the hook, and also use 4th DSlip, the game was much easier, but even without those, the game is manageable. People who complain about M1's difficulty or encounter rate just never played any other 8-bit RPG.

Did Mother 2 have any hidden bosses? I remember Mother 3 had plenty, and Mother 1 has this deep sea fish boss, which I completely missed on my first playthrough. This made the game harder since I didn't have the onyx hook that this boss drops.

Using onyx hook and bread crumbs is a great combination.

To think my first playthrough of the game I didn't know how to use the bread, and I didn't even got the hook (I think I completely missed the boss that gives it, since it's not mandatory), but I still could manage just well without needing the easy patch.
