I was genuinely scared of it as a kid, and even back then I wasn't typically scared by media. It might be funny to say it now but what freaked me out the most were those squeaky little transparent children things, the ones that don't act as enemies or anything, the ones that are just there. They really freaked me out because my 10 year old brain simply couldn't reason away why they were a part of the experience. They would just show up, move around some, make some strange noises, then disappear. It was like why even? It was just effective on me then. I do appreciate the game today but I don't think that's necessarily because of my experience with it as a kid. I didn't even beat it back then. However, I think this along with the Psycho Mantis section in Metal Gear Solid left me with a solid appreciation of horror and what goes into making the surreal or meta scary, because these were both instances of weird things happening in games I had a difficult time truly understanding, and the thought processes behind them really fascinated me and continued to do so years later.
