The funny part is that it was Nintendo who told Rare to make the characters less kiddy.

The only thing I don't like about tribal collecting is that you need to re-do a whole level if you accidentally get one of them killed, then again it also adds some sort of tension because of that.

But anyway, the first 10 hours or so in the game don't require any tribal collecting or ship part hunting, and it's enjoyable as fuck.
Then having to go back to previous planets with different characters isn't so bad although it can be a bit of a burnout if you plan to speedrun the game, it's better to play in shorter sessions, or let the game rest for a bit. I just picked it up again after months and now I'm hunting for the tribals. Since I haven't played the game in a long while, it's good to revisit old planets because I don't remember much about them. I also just found one of the secret planets.

Anyway, sometimes I feel like checking a walkthrough because sometimes you might spent an hour playing only to find out you can't rescue all the tribals with the character you're using, happened to me on the military base level where you can only rescue all the tribals with Lupus doe to needing his hovering.
The game is also sometimes a bit too complicated with alternate paths and the keys you need to advance, but then again I don't really mind that the game isn't holding my hand, but it's easy to get lost and not knowing where to go.

Most people wouldn't give the game a chance though since it's an early 3D game and not a popular one like Banjo or Goldeneye/Perfect Dark.

JFG is one of my favorite Rare games but it's destined to remain obscure.
It got decent reviews and hype when it came out, though.

Same for Blast Corps.

I've mixed feelings with JFG.
I don't generally like that late 90s CGI graphics style, and I find most designs on games like Banjo or Conker kind of boring, or too simple.
But I like JFG's sci-fi approach.
Also Vela a cute. CUTE!

What's your honest opinion on this game?

I've picked it up again recently and playing it and I'm amazed at how good it is, gameplay is very solid, graphics and sound are amazing, enemy AI is pretty good and I love how they get dismembered when you blast them off, collecting insect heads has never been this fun.

Is the tribal collection the real reason why this game isn't as well liked as say, Goldeneye or Banjo-Kazooie? Or is it because it's a late N64 game and maybe it went under some people's radars?

Even if the tribal collection turns some people off, there's still the multiplayer modes, and also I think finding all tribals isn't that bad, I've seen worse case of collecthatons (including the aforementioned Banjo-Kazooie).

It's quickly growing to be my favorite Rare game.
