speaking of gf barbs does anyone know how to make the merc survive hell trav? When I did it on realms I felt like I was using meme gear: ebotd war pike, ebug treach, and CoT, and he never lived very long against them.

Whirlwind is generally the way to go because it handles both single targets and crowds, and leeches L/M like holy hell

it's true that sorcs are the best MFers but barbs have niches, such as horking corpses (find item skill). Specialized MF barbs focus on the act3 travincal council because of the zany gold piles. Specced for goldfind they are easily as good as MF sorcs based on the sheer volume of gambling they can do.
