I thought it was fine, disappointing sure but otherwise it was Shenmue. Just watered down.

These were the issues I had with it:
>VA's changed across the board for no reason when pretty much every single one of them were fine with coming back
>The city was empty and soulless for no reason, at best you'll see two people walking around the place that you can't even talk to. Might as well add 10 or 15 of them to make it feel like it's a location and it couldn't have been too hard
>The village plot is that there are two people who Ryo need to beat up and he can't until he gets "stronger" and learns some new move. The City plot is EXACTLY THE FUCKING SAME but it's a gang instead.
>Lan Di's fight was pathetic, should've been a fight where you take double the damage you dish out so no matter what you lose but it feels like you've accomplished SOMETHING. He just dodges everything in the actual fight until you lose.
>Lack of Sega arcades and toy capsules was a real shame
>New Stamina/Health system was pretty crappy
>Revamped fighting system wasn't good and a massive step down from the Virtua fighter we had previous. It's just too basic to be good
>Story doesn't go anywhere, it feels like this should've been Disc 4 of Shenmue 2 with the city plot being Kowloon or Hong Kong again
>A lot of padding, collecting 2000 and then 5000 yuan in the game was just tedious and added nothing to it
>AN EPIC GAME STORE EXCLUSIVE

Probably a few more I'm forgetting since I finished it.

It's not a terrible game and has its positives, but it pales in comparison to Shenmue 1 and 2. If Shenmue 4 does happen I hope it'll be slightly higher quality than 3 was, apparently 2 years worth of the dev time was spent working out how the fuck unreal works so given another 4-5 years it might actually be good if spent entirely on development and if it actually happens.

If 1 and 2 were 9/10 games, Shenmue 3 is about a 6-7/10. It has some of the charm of the originals but lacks everything else.

I wouldn't put off showing Shenmue to people, hell even as a joke. You never know where it might lead. Just because it may never have a finished story doesn't mean that people won't enjoy 1 and 2, and in some cases they may even fall in love with the game.

A few years back I was showing my friends Shenmue as a joke, I loved it a lot but I could easily laugh with others at the terrible voice acting and how autistic Ryo was, on top of showing the immense detail and dumb things like Capsule toys and Arcade machines. I only played it for like 20 minutes before I switched to something else, but when I was going back home with them, one of my friends just said "Yo, that game you were playing in Japan looked cool, what was it" and he got into it from there. Him playing it also got around 4 other people into the game and they all finished it and even bought Shenmue 3 to play as well.

The guy who asked me about it originally puts Shenmue on his 3x3 and he would've never done that without me showing it to him.

Don't wanna see the thread die so have a blogpost.

>2016
>at the vidya club at uni
>by that point in the year, no one but friends would attend so we'd just do whatever for three hours for fun
>usually meant i'd have to bring some form of entertainment because i loved the soc and didn't want it to die
>bring my dreamcast and some ripped games
>put on shenmue to show how crazy it is ("woah, dude look at this stupid dub"/"haha, isn't this game crazy I can open draws and shit!"/"look I can talk to EVERYONE")
>didn't have a save prior to this so I had to start the game from the beginning
>everyone just watching the intro to Shenmue in a dark room
>around 4-7 people there including myself
>spent around an hour playing it
>after the soc is over, we pack up and start walking home
>one of my friends I live with who pretty much shows no interest in vidya asks me what that game I was playing was because he wants to emulate it
>shocked, i help him out and download the game and emu for him
>he plays and loves the game, even asking me where to find an english dub of Shenmue 2 for Dreamcast (he's a diehard subfag in everything)
>him playing it somehow sparks FIVE other friends over the course of the next three years to want to play this game
>ranging from emulation, to my own copies I eventually bought, to the HD edition
>some of us are actually gonna meet up next weekend to play through Shenmue 3 together

I did my best Suzuki-san.

Probably because it's the only complete story Suzuki got to make, iirc he wanted 7 games spanning some 16 chapters, and Shenmue 1 was only chapter 1 (Shenmue 2 was meant to take place entirely on a boat, and I think Shenmue 3 was meant to be the Hong Kong arc/Kowloon arc we got in Shenmue 2) There are also some reports Shenmue 1 was meant to be 7 discs with the china arc in there as well.

If anything, Sega had been blowing the budget on the two of them, since the game was in development since 1994 (I think) and was going to release on the Saturn which would've been some technical marvel.

You can even see Shenmue 2's locations in that small clip. They probably had both games planned out and made only to move it all over to the Dreamcast, and as time went on it became infeasible to give Suzuki what he wanted for 2.

There were usually codebreaker codes that could allow for widescreen hacks, I imagine with time someone would be able to make a mod for the PC version so cutscenes are in widescreen, although culling is a different issue altogether and while you can make the game widescreen on NullDC it'll have culling pretty badly.

Although, I remember playing Metroid Prime last year and finding a widescreen code to completely eliminate culling, so there could be a workaround in time.

It's because the game is boring and having many people to ask questions to doesn't help. Don't get me wrong, I love Shenmue 1 and 2 and never had any problems with the game (well, except for the phone book bit since I don't know why the Hazuki family didn't have one and there was a dedicated phone call place) but there were moments where I didn't know where to go and was stuck in a 10-15 minute loop of asking people stuff until they eventually told me.

I did like that though, I enjoyed talking to people and finding information and stuff. It made it interesting and unique.

Although, I have no clue what that anon you're referring to is talking about. Whenever someone was important, they would always tell you where to find him and usually a cutscene would occur once you've found the area indicating that you've found him. I could think of any moment in both games where you had to find a single person in an area where control wasn't taken from you.

And you didn't even talk about the shitty one page comics that poorly explain some of the shit people wondered, Suzuki poorly trying to squeeze three of the "chapters" in one game and the idea that he initially wanted to make like five or six shenmue games.

I drew this for /v/ but the requester never seemed to show up, so maybe it belongs here.

Also, don't give up hope, guys.
I don't think we'll have more games, but maybe Suzuki releases the other chapters in a book, or a comic, who knows?
