It removed the dialog system and significantly cut down the amount of text. Overland monsters are replaced with random encounters.
U4 does deserve some credit for its combat system. Navigating the dungeon rooms is annoying but impassable terrain added tactical depth.
The original tilework is simple but fine. Can't really expect much more of the Apple II.
