It did have better graphics. It's just that the first level, which has stone houses in the fucking desert, fails to show this. That's just the backgrounds, the animation is unquestionably much better (animated by Disney).

And level design, level length/size, music, bonus levels, gameplay, and amount of units sold (it sold more carts despite the smaller install base of the console).

The SNES game barely even managed to scroll in more than 1 direction, and it was extremely linear.

Oh and the backgrounds are fine on the Genesis version as long as you are not cherry picking and you apply the dithering the game used.

Genesis one didn't even have bad backgrounds. You just have to keep in mind the following:
- emulators make the game look worse due to pixel-perfect output
- all the levels were HUGE and scrolled in every direction. SNES ones rarely scrolled in more than 1 direction.
