Filters would have less of a bad rep if people were more tasteful with them. When you're upscaling an image 4x, you are asking whatever algorithm you're using to create 16 new pixels for each old one. Not only is that a tough ask, but no pixel art upscaler has 100% coverage, and the difference between pixels that it caught and pixels that it didn't become magnified as you go beyond 2x.
