No, it wasn't. And even if it was the energy attacks they used were part of the fun. Goku and Frieza's fight lasts a long time. It begins with normal Goku fighting against a Frieza not using his hands and ends with SSGoku using a beam attack. It's a much more balanced fight than you give it credit for.
