Was the PlayStation designed with 3D games in mind in the first place?

I've always wondered why when I was younger and I would play games like Ocarina of Time on my N64 and then switch over to Spyro on PSX, all of the 3D games on it would look like shit in movement. I actually looked into it finally and I found that it has no z-buffer, hence the jittery sort of look. Now even though the N64 was technically faster, had a z-buffer, had some filtering and could draw polygons like nobody's business, it lacked the texture fidelity that the PlayStation had due to its media. It wasn't until the very end with games like Conker that were on 64mb cartridges that the textures had real detail if they were individual textures and not just small panels being repeated.

So with its CD media format, the PlayStation had much more storage space and could obviously pull off the textures with no problem whatsoever. However, it just missed two things - a z-buffer and texture filtering, both of which the N64 had. So effectively, the two biggest competitors of the 5th gen had certain things and lacked certain things that, if they were together as one console, would have produced games pretty much on par with early Dreamcast titles. Just imagine what the PlayStation could have looked like. Why did it not have a z-buffer or bilinear filtering? Hardware limitations or something? It has 3D hardware acceleration I believe, so it seems odd. I guess that was intended for 3D effects on top of 2D games, like in Symphony of The Night. On the other end, imagine what the N64 could have looked like had it not used fucking cartridges and instead used CDs. Seems like everybody fucked up in some way during that generation.

What are some high fantasy PS1 games? preferably with dragons. Well not necessarily "high fantasy" fantasy will do, but emphasis on dragons

So I have a PS1 and a few games, but I'm afraid to play them 'cause I don't want to end up scratching them.
Do PS1 games get scratched more easily than other disc-based games?
Do they get scratches if I handle them with care and just play them?

Almost everything on ps1
I skipped the console, tho my younger brother had one. He just played shitty sports- and racing games I never really got into.

I did play a lot of Medal of honor, Quake and Tekken at a friends house and I borrowed FF VII and VIII from a friend and played them. But other than that I kind of just didn't play as much until ps2 and wii came along. Now I'm trying to figure out what I missed.
