>removed most RPG mechanics and the stats screen is gone
>stats now never go down
>can only teach her the right things
>no clear objectives, just wander aimlessly to trigger events
>no real puzzles, just grind

I love how interactive Josette is in 2 and all, but they really stripped the gameplay. Almost to the point where it's a visual novel. WPJ1 was a great raising sim/adventure game so I don't understand why they changed directions so hard.

Wonder Project J is a really great raising-sim/adventure game hybrid. It's a Pinocchio story starring a robot boy and you play the role of Jiminy Cricket. You don't control Pino directly, instead you direct his attention to something and he decides what to do with it. If he does what you want, you praise him, if not then you scold him. There's also an RPG element of balancing Pino's stats which will go both up and down depending on what he does.

There was also a sequel on the N64 starring a robot girl, but it can be difficult to emulate properly. It doesn't have the RPG elements, but you can now have short conversations with the girl.

There was Wonder Project J on the SNES and it's sequel J2 on the N64. They were a lot like Pac-Man 2 but with some RPG stat mechanics (in J1 at least, J2 dropped them) and you could teach the protagonist to always act a certain way with objects.

There was also Lifeline on the PS2 where you gave voice commands to the protagonist using a microphone.
