I don't get it either, it has a timeless aesthetic. Then again, so do the other 2D Mario games.
I think people just want to have "hot takes" for the sake of having them. Maybe that anon isn't baiting and actually has some "visceral" negative feels toward it though, maybe some blocked out bad memories he has that he associates with SMW on a subconscious level.

I don't like to pertake in the whole "my favorite best, your favorite shit" extremist stuff, I think all the main SMB games have a pretty good aesthetic and they're all rather unique but yeah I like SMW the best probably.
I love the looney tunes-esque gags during the cutscenes a lot too. SMW Mario sprite is my favorite depiction of Mario.

That reminds me when Mario looked at the camera after the explosion in one of the cutscenes of SMW.

Fucking love those cutscenes. They added a Looney Tunes-esque humor to it.

NMSB always followed the SMB3 mechanics, not SMW's.
SMW is still the only Mario game where you can throw objects upwards instead of only sideways.
NMSB added wall jump to 2D Mario, although SMB1 had a sort of proto-walljump hidden mechanic.

SMB3 is equally great.

I really like the art direction on SMW, I think it has my favorite Mario sprite design, and I love the humor.
