Why did puritans not complain about the fact that SE purposely made the best female companion in the game an anthropomorphic rat? Consider the implications that this notion has.

Depends on the game. If it's very story/character focused having set classes is best. FFIX did a great job of giving some leeway to learn new moves and mildly affect stats while still keeping true to the character. Steiner would always still be the tank, Vivi always the mage, etc. It's easier to get invested when a character matches their personality in battle.

However, I tend to have more fun and put more hours into RPGs where I can experiment. FFV is a good example of this, and more recently Bravely Default though that isn't /vr/. I can still stay sucked in because I'd just pick class lineups that I thought matched the characters personalities. Like Salsa from FFV I made a thief first, then a viking, pirate, etc to match her upbringing. Made Butz a swordsman, knight, etc, and so on. I would also alternate into strange roles as the game progressed to learn all the classes though.

I prefer customizable characters but if the game is good, I'm perfectly fine with preset characters as well.

I'm sorry, but I think V and VI far superpassed IV. IV did start the trend and was revolutionary for the series but everything it did was done better by its successors.

That said, my favorite is VI, followed by IX, then VII, then V. I just started playing III so I can't judge but I'm really enjoying it.

You're right, the framerate is low, but that isn't what does it for me. It's largely because of just how long it takes for battles to start (Somewhere close to 20-25 seconds) and the general speed of them to begin with; even on the highest speed setting, those ATB bars crawl, even near the end of the game.

Also there's other dumb things like stealing never ever working during boss fights meaning Zidane is pretty much dedicated to attempting to steal for every single turn if you want the weapons with really good abilities earlier. Just dumb shit like that gets on my nerves.

But like I said, for all its faults, it's still by far my favorite in the series, even with its shortcomings in terms of character development and story. It feels rushed, but as if they gave it everything they got while they could.
