Havi g actual competition and being basically an upgraded NES ensured that, while successful, the SNES would never be the cultural phenomenon the NES/Famicom was. It goes further than SNES, though. With each console generation Nintendo get farther and farther from being able to touch the levgacy of the NES. That's why they haven't created an indelible franchise like Mario or Zelda in 20+ years, and why theyre cracking down on rom distributors. ROMs of their classic games and the Smash series are basically their only real revenue streams at this point, and Smash is only successful because of its ties to classic Nintendo. They are incapable of doing anything but ride their own coattails at this point.

Duh! I know about that, but then NOA would distribute pamphlets like this to retailers telling everyone to use "Nintendo" as an adjective rather than as a a noun. If they don't want to confuse their products with the company, they shouldn't call their console "Nintendo this" or "Super Nintendo that" in the first place and choose to emphasize the "NES" and "Super NES" in their brandings. At least NCL had enough sense to call their consoles the "Famicom" and "Super Famicom".
