Build is in a sweet spot where it's capable enough to represent lots of real world places, even if not realistically, well enough to trigger some suspension of disbelief. Yet abstract enough to support large complex levels like Doom does with large variety in environments, without pushing standards high enough that mappers have to create lots of unique assets. Want a mars base? Take moon textures and tint them red, done.

It's perfect for making "cool places" e.g. space bases, ancient egyptian tombs, mars colonies, giant sprawling city levels, etc. basically stuff that everyone's inner 12 year old would love.

Has to be Dark Side, the atmosphere is still great today. Just absolute top kino. The trams, the multi-level design, being able to do stuff like dive into the tanks. Duke is known for quips and raunch and gore but its atmosphere and environment design is underrated
