Lufia & the Fortress of Doom is exceedingly archaic and generic, but it has a pretty heartwarming story and its localization was top notch. Definitely the most memorable "generic RPG" for me.

The gameplay, the inca-style soundtrack themes, the graphical style and even the last minute wtf plot twists keep me from thinking Granstream was generic. It may have been mediocre, but it was very original in most respects.

It's funny that Beyond the Beyond is so widely (and probably rightly) panned for being generic and forgettable, while Golden Sun is praised by everyone when they're basically the same game. I just finished playing GS2 yesterday (I forced myself to beat it, been in the backlog for years) and I can barely remember a thing about its characters or story. What a forgettable and bland plot. And yeah, like Beyond the Beyond, full of characters that won't fucking shut up.
