the problem is not that the components are expensive, designing a durable microswitch thumbstick is expensive.
take pic related, for example, and ask any anon that has bought one of those how durable it was. chances are 80 to 90% of them will tell you that not very much.

that "d-stick" is pretty good for shmup but you need to get used to it if you want to use it in fighters.
I have pic related, deathsmiles, mushihime-sama and all the other cave shmup play very good with it. guilty gear xx acpr also plays fine once you adjust to it.

I have this one and it works pretty well.
I've never had a neogeo cd pad in my hands to compare, but this one is super responsive and it's very confortable to use for shmup, for fighters you need to get used to it but after that it's really good too.
the downside would be that is really noisy because of the microswitches.
