SaGa Frontier 2 is the biggest one for me. That game is breathtaking.

There's the SaGa games for that, Legend of Mana's the way it is because it was produced and co-directed by Kawazu.
it's a Mana meets SaGa game, many of the special techs are taken straight from SaGa games too and the game has cross bonus content if you import SaGa Frontier 2's data into it, likewise, SaGa Frontier 2 has bonus items only accessible if you import LoM's data, both games were made by mostly the same team too, which is also why they share similar visuals.
Even the No Future mode is a reference to the first Frontier game.

Some great gems, but all the companies focused too much on 3D which was beyond their hardware to make really shine.

On the whole aside from 2nd gen, it's the weakest era of video games.

I love love love the look of Tales of Destiny. It's like a SNES game in way higher res. (probably because it was originally going to be a SNES game)

My top most visually impressive PS1 game though is SaGa Frontier 2. A whole world of beautiful, animated watercolour paintings that you explore with these wonderful hand drawn sprites... That game is so fucking great.
