I had one of my two stock d-pads start dying due to overuse leading to a torn membrane, so to change the pace got the NES Advantage which was okay based around the ads. The turbo function was useful for dominating Pro Wrestling and when I rented Track & Field 2, but it was essentially cheating. Other joysticks are closer to the feel of arcade sticks because the stick of the NES Advantage is kind of soft without much feedback. The Sega Arcade Power Stick and Capcom Power Stick Fighter has a shorter travel and click feedback when a cardinal direction was actuated. The button feel of these early joystick options were still very far from the arcade.

I don't mind it being up top away from the main buttons, reduces the chance of accidentally pausing the game. I don't recall too many Genesis games utilizing the start button for its main non-menu functions, while I mainly only recall the start button was used in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out for the power attack.

It was used for rentals of Track & Field 2 and defending the championship for many opponents in NES Pro Wrestling. The silicone conductive pads were tearing after so much use on my original two stock pads that were bundled with the system that I had to choose the best for one, and use the Advantage for P2.

I thought the design was pretty cool. It has space to rest your palms in an ergonomic angled format. The buttons don't feel as good, but it also stands out with being compatible with the Famicom as well. I am looking for the white Mega Drive one, once I can save up enough to go back.
