I’m sorry, it just is. I won’t pretend it’s perfect or that I’m not nostalgic as hell for playing it on release but damn, nothing ever matched the vibes on this one. Earthbound, Super Mario RPG, Trials of Mana and FFV are in a similar class. For later titles, DQ8, Star Ocean 3, Xenosaga trilogy.

As for why, it's the whole package for me. It has a fun story that progresses quickly and is filled with memorable moments that run the spectrum from fun and exhilarating to sad and poignant, charming characters, a 10/10 OST and art style, fun combat with a lot of neat options for mixing things up through position and synergies between party members, lots of endings, clever and cool side quests... it's probably my favorite game of all time.
