>It's a pleasingly bizarre fantasy of the real world
>It is an approximation of an idea
FYI this is incorrect, video games are not "approximations" or abstractions of anything, they are primitive virtual realities and should be understood and analyzed like their own little universes. There is no "real" Lost Woods that has been abstracted, just as Link's heart meter is not an abstraction of any "real" indicator of health. It's just its own weird world with weird rules.

I played SS1 without modding it. It's hardly a "nightmare." It's not really that hard to deal with at all. It takes a little practice to get comfortable, which is really not that big of a deal. The mouselook mod certainly makes it easier to get into but it's perfectly playable without it.

If people said "this game is old and I don't like playing it because [feature] annoys me" instead of this "aged" nonsense we could have much better discussions.

>It rarely occurred to anyone to even want a story in an action game
Nonsense. Compared to today's games it may seem laughable, but various genres including FPSes were experimenting with cutscenes and story beats all over the place. And it's not like HL1 was the first game to attempt it, either. SiN came out first, and even when you compare Quake 2 to Quake 1 you can see how much more cinematic Quake 2 is.

This guy is correct. HL1 was of course influential, but that was simply the direction games were heading. People wanted more cinematic games, it was something people fantasized about all the time, the idea of a game "like being in a movie." Of course in hindsight we can see the negative impact of this trend and what happens when you attempt it at the expense of interactivity, but it's always been something people dreamed about.

The quote is not fake that the shitty wiki edit references an article that doesn't even address the quote.

The quote is from an account by Steven Kent, who claimed to be in the room with Miyamoto and Stamper when he said it. If by "sourced" you mean "audio clip available on the internet" then there isn't that, but he's stated it multiple times and put it in print in The Ultimate History of Video Games, a very well-referenced and sourced book overall. If he was making shit up someone at Nintendo would just say it's a fake quote, but instead Miyamoto has to go "yes, well, just for the record I do like that game" which has nothing to do with whether he actually said it. Maybe he was just grumpy that day, who knows.

Goodbye Galaxy (Keen 4) came out in 1991 and had great graphics and variety for the time. Of course if you're looking for high challenge and super tight stage design it doesn't rank highly, but it's not an arcade-style game.
