They use 4 microswitches and 8 springs to hold the stick in place. Too many moving parts, breaks quite easily. Microswitches also don't last long. Your mouse buttons don't last as long as your membrane keyboard for the same reason.

Because they're cheap, compact, and could be used while lazing on your couch. Another reason is because everyone copied nintendo because they wanted a share of their cake. I prefer keyboard arrow keys by a huge margin, they're much faster and more precise. Arcade sticks and some C64 sticks like pic related are better than dpad too. It could be used on a sega master system I think, but I'm not sure. Dpads, especially nintendo dpads, suck at diagonals.

Because 3D era games have 360 degree movement. 2D era games are only capable of 8 degrees, or 16 at most with the intellivision.
