They could have just continued making SEGA CD and 32X games which already had a decent install base, Genesis was still alive and well into the mid-90's (literally when I got mine) instead of moving onto a completely different platform.

Let's say for argument's sake they did skip the add-ons.

>Knuckles Chaotix gets released as 'Sonic Crackers' with no 3D Special Stages or scaling effects
>Popful Mail and Snatcher get basic cartridge ports with no CD audio or voice acting
>Virtua Racing Deluxe uses the standard SVP cart
>no Virtua Fighter 32X
>no Shadow Squadron
>no Tempo
>no Ecco CD
It would have undoubtedly affected the development of the Saturn, but not necessarily in a good way. Without any experience using CD's, they may have even ended up going the Nintendo route and sticking with cartridges

I don't know why people opt for the Model 1. Other than aesthetics it has zero benefit compared to the Model 2, which is also less expensive. And aesthetically the Model 2 looks fine with the original Genesis anyway and has much better BIOS music.
