UK gaming mags of the 90s also had the most open and savage inter-console rivalries. The Sony, Sega and Nintendo mags would openly attack each other, and this battleground is where such genius insults as "Phony GreyStation" and "Sega SadTurd" were invented.

Generally /vr/ is extreme denial about the success (or lack thereof) of the N64 and by extension its addon. We can debate the specific reasons but the overall point is nintendo went from dictating how the entire gaming industry operates to effectively a footnote (as we know they came back) in a single generation. Personally I think a lot of it is down to the very japanese-centric attitude they (and sega) had which meant they did not adapt to the worldwide market fast enough whereas sony did. Sony also undercutting licensing costs and basically allowing whatever the fuck was a huge boon as well allowing smaller studios - some of which are titans today - get off the ground with their early titles.

The N64DD was ultimately doomed from the start even in japan as its cost along with no games. Nobody was really going to support such a device when all that storage had such a tiny framebuffer to work with.

Pic only mildly related but amusing.
