I got into Doom via Brutal Doom, but not by actually playing it. I saw some video coverage of the mod and thought it looked cool, and said to myself "maybe I should finally get around to playing Doom 1 and Doom 2." By the time I finished both games vanilla and tried out BD, I only played it like 30 minutes before getting bored of it.

Your points are valid, and in fact you're even forgetting some of the game's flaws like some senseless backtracking devoid of any enemy or the awful VA with a faggot voice.

However you're being very harsh on the game.
Deep Fear is actually one of the best RE clones, how many have you played?

>movement is great, hit detection is tight, animations are smooth
>the game is functional and not broken in any way

This is more than can be said of most RE clones.

Also,

Yeah, not a SINGLE RE clone got that part right, not even Silent Hill.

tl;dr Deep Fear isn't great, but if you think it's shit, you need to play more RE clones. Evil Dead on PS1, AitD4, Martian Gothic, Countdown Vampires, etc all of these are broken in at least one way

Says the guy who worked on the scenario.. while Mikami says it was supposed to be an "add-on" called RE2.5.

But bringing alpha and betas ides and calling them "how it was supposed to be" isn't right. If we do that, then RE1 was supposed to be a FPS. Then it was supposed to involve cybords and have 2 player co-ops. Then, DMC was supposed to be RE4. Then, RE4 was supposed to be a survival horror involving smoke ghosts on a flying zepplin and a haunted castle. See where I'm going here?

The fact remains, the first time CV was ever EVEN mentionned was in TGS 1998 iirc, and it was already called Biohazard: Code Veronica. It was NEVER supposed to be RE3.

The problem is people are STILL getting confused because

I have no doubt that a magazine having exclusives images of CV would say "images of RE3!" on the cover. That's what they do, like they say "Duke Nukem 4" and "Silent Hill 5" even though neither ever existed.

Another fact is that CV could NEVER have been RE3, because CV was developped for Dreamcast from the start, and Capcom still had a contract with Sony to have a 3rd "main, numbered RE title" on Playstation.
If anything, CV is the spin-off because of this.
People who like CV over RE3 live in their own little fantasy in which they believe that claiming "CV was supposed to be RE3" somehow makes it less of a shit game.

RE canon is a fucking disaster. It kept changing and changing over time, going in every direction only to step back and say

only then to say the same thing about that new version a bit later.

Seriously. The only "canon" that matters is playing RE1, 2 and 3 and sticking to that story. Everything else is a fucking mess, including 0 and to a lesser extent REmake, although for REmake it's more due to the stuff around it then to REmake itself.

Yes, DOSbox.

DOSbox is still the best way to play SW. It plays great, too. Just set up bMouse if needed.
Get the GOG version.

I have spent HUNDREDS of hours in Carma1 as a kid. Splat Pack was alright but disappointing.

I love about "transparency" becomes such a supposedly meaningfull arguement every type the Saturn ports of RE1 and SOTN are brought up.
For one thing, transparency is a rare occasion, and the Saturn versions way of coming over it work just fine.

There are much more important things, like audio quality, background quality, extra content, but for some reasons this always come after "transparency" for people who want to "objectively state with facts that the Saturn versions are worse".

Nothing personal against you, but years after "transparency transparency transparency transparency" just ended triggering me.
