Bud, you must have forgotten just how big 3D was in the 2nd half of the 90s. It was basically go 3D or go home. You can't blame people seeing 3D for the first time, jumping to it from SNES and Genesis. Every series was under a huge pressure to jump to 3D.
To really answer your question, MK would become a butt of jokes if it still used sprites, and get compared all the time to "real" new breed of fighters like VF / Tekken. It wouldn't sell, or commercial guys would simply not see potential in it, and it would surely get panned by mags. 2D was considered last year, and "fuck 2D" mentality was very real, which only started to slowly go away in around mid 2000s.

>That was a single British N64 mag that ran a preview of C64 while bashing Symphony.
Here's that preview.

I'm sure there's a philosophical topic on how we view today previous art eras.

Like we see with nostalgia googles the NES and SNES eras, because we have forgotten all the hundreds of showelware NES and SNES games.

But isn't ironic that games we give the GOTY awards, nobody remembers them a couple years later?

Like the last of US 2, which the industry will give it the GOTY, but I'm sure it wont be remembered.

Meanwhile you got indie games that are still remembered today, like cave story, which had a bigger influence on the indie game industry than the last of us will have.

I know this is kind of obvious, but It feels weird that the reality is diferent to the world of hype and marketing we see on social media.

Like today games we will remember decades from now on some 2050 /vr/ board will be indie games like undertale instead of billion dollar movie games.

And It feels weird that this same thing we could be asking in 1996-1997 and the games the industry hyped then were diferent than the games we remember now.

Still mad you got a flat, 2D platform game in 1997?

The N64 games are the only ones worth playing.
