Upbeat games, huh? The old Marios and Sonics have that in general, so those are typically suitable. Kirby games are also very cheerful.

Yoshi's Island is colorful and novel, though perhaps a bit stressful. Some older Zelda games can be lighthearted, though with Link's Awakening, it's got this weird and dreamlike quirk factor which is fun, but then a bittersweet ending (assuming you get the best one). Depending on your hardship, that one might be a bit too much of a bummer.

Earthbound has a lot of odd cheer and humor in its quirky setting. It has minute bits of existential moments, and the final boss gets kind of dark, but good wins.
Avoid Mother 3 if you feel like this though.

Puyo Puyo games are relatively light hearted. Like not 100%, but the more serious aspects don't wander too much outside of the main Madou Monogatari series.

Super Punch-Out doesn't have any serious or heavy plot or anything, just a solid boxing game with some very fun cartoon characters.

The old Harvest Moon games can be somewhat fun, though they can also sort of reflect the whole chore aspect of running a farm too much, primarily the first one. No strife or sorrow or anything though, just planting and harvesting crops, raising livestock, looking after and building up the farm in general, and getting married to one of the pretty girls (I liked the redheaded tomboy the most).

Warioland is a Super Mario game, except you play as Mario's crooked cousin, Wario. Wario is a (strong)fat, violent, and greedy lout who's not afraid of getting his hands dirty, a bit of an anti-hero after Mario beat him up for grand theft castle, in his first game of his own he targets a pirate gang to progressively beat up and rob for all their ill gotten loot. There's something very fun about being the plucky asshole bandit who outbandits the other bandits, shoulder tackling little pirate goons to send them flying off the screen with a ricochet noise, then greedily pocketing their gold coins.

yea bowser's sub can never be seen again after you get the 1st star.
im guessing it has something to do with being tied to the water wall that blocks boswer's 2nd level. since thats something that can only happen once. maybe jolly roger bay had something similar at one point

>And there's something intangibly dark regarding outside the castle. I'll say it, something about the outside of the castle in Mario 64 feels evil. Sure, I'll play the game, but something off there.
