Beat Doom 1 and 2

Thinking about playing Shadowcaster next, then Hexen 1 and 2.

Or is it essential that I play Final Doom. It seems like just a mod or something, not that different from Doom 2, and I'm that guy who's kinda pissed at Doom 2 not being a very good sequel.
