If people were reasonable they'd just come up with a new grouping for eras clearly different from the classic retro era. It's easy to see the problem with just a blanket 20 year scale. The idea of grouping stuff like pong/donkey kong with super mario 64 or OoT is kind of ridiculous and gets more ridiculous as you move up. It practically makes the definition worthless. You can argue about what gens fit where but it should be about the general with footnotes for the handful of exceptions

You get a nice beat em up for the first two levels and then the game goes full on hardcore mode, i've only managed to beat the turbo tunnel once without cheating

The best games are those that make you feel like a bad-ass, require practice and technique, and memorization.

Feeling like a bad-ass is that which makes you feel alive. Your fuel for gaming.
A level of excitement, something that gets you out of the bed.
Practice and technique is your potential to exert your will upon the game-world in various ways.
Memorization is an interpretative framework that informs you of a proper way to do a thing.

JRPGs, adventure games/visual novels, walking simulators, games without difficulty, "metroidvanias" (i.e., Symphony of the Night), games trying to be "art", and overly linear games are an anathema. They do not contain the aforementioned precepts. I doubt the creators of these games could even beat games with those precepts, let alone master or even code one.

I have. Intruder Excluder is one of the most fun levels in the game; with a couple more platforming-based levels like that instead of the worse gimmick ones like Volkmire's inferno or Clinger Winger this game could have become a true classic instead of a meme laughingstock, it's a shame

I'll just leave this here...

What are some examples of games that comprise several types of gameplay?

(as sizable parts of the game that you need to clear to advance, not bonus stages or whatnot)

I'd honesty play an entire game made of vertical levels with the quality of The Revolution and Includer Excluder; with some tweaks the game could have been a true classic instead of the tired Nintendo Harrrrd meme it has become.

> Ragnarok's Canyon
Keep as-is, good and fun introductory level

> Wookie Hole
Keep as-is, even add a second one later on. Super fun to play, specially in co-op.

> Turbo Tunnel
Maybe tweak a little (like in the Japanese version) to smooth the difficulty curve for meme crybabies

> Arctic Caverns
Keep as-is. Maybe less one-hit kills.

> Surf City
Best vehicle level, keep as-is

> Karnath's Lair
Good concept but only fun the first time around. Either do a complete design audit or dump it.

> Volkmire's Inferno
Just a crappier Turbo Tunnel. Dump it

> Intruder Excluder
Probably the best level in the game, keep as-is. Maybe redesign the checkpoints

> Terra Tubes
Could use a good design revision, it relies a lot on memorization, but it's fun and challenging anyway.

> Rat Race
Challenge a bit too steep, but a good twist on Intruder Excluder

> Clinger Winger
Asshole move. Fucking dump it or use a revised version earlier in the game

> The Revolution
Perfect final challenge, keep as-is.

Kusoge doesn't apply to *any* bad afaik, just campy/funny bad. Even if it did, having a specialized term for it doesn't really validate as objective any decision of whether a game is actually hard or simply poorly designed.

It's a pretty gray area that hinges on blurry criteria and requires argumentation to even make a valid point, and usually the online approach is based on categorical, loud statements, and parroting celeb opinions. Pre-Internet you'd find as many people who would defend Battletoads as fair hard as those who would say it sux lmao wwtt.

This, literally once (Rat Race is usually the tricky one for me); the japanese version is more casually doable though

Any game gets easy once you are willing to spend enough time getting better at it.

Battletoads has a fairly assy design, with the whole 90s gameplay smorgasbord ruining what could have been an awesome game if they had kept it more focused; still, more than half the stages are very fun to play, and overall, it's a very satisfying game to beat, and a pretty amazing one at a technical level.

I keep seeing the same old schtick about the obstacle course levels being about memorization, but the "buggy" part is new to me. There's that stuff about Clinger Winger being unbeatable in co-op mode because of a nasty glitch, but I can't think of any other thing messing up the game that is not a combination of malevolent design (you can probably rationalize the necessary practice and familiarity with the levels to overcome that as "cheap memorization" if it helps), and a very common dose of your own motherfucking fault.

Terra Tubes takes the most skill if you ask me. I hate when I die trying to make a simple out of water jump over the spikes. It's a long one too.

Master juggling birds in the Wookie Hole and you can beat it.

I'd be cruising the Turbo Tunnel....with the option of pausing and rockin' out.

You'll be able to do this shit in your sleep before you get anywhere near the end of the game.

That part in that one game where you had the guy do the thing to get over the thingies.

Man, that was tough.
