Ladder resets, at least in Hardcore mode, is like bi annual Everest climbing sprints. Only the top couple hundred will make it to the top, and it's just fun to see people dying in every possible way. As you get beyond level 70 the blood pressure and adrenaline rise and you get to see some devastating butthurt along the way which is both hilarious and sad. The real addiction is the meta shit, not just the gameplay.

Guys help I can't decide. D2 hardcore ladder or LOD hardcore ladder? I fucking hate maintaining Merc and being funneled into the same old rune hunting endgame of LOD but D2 regular is so dead I'm not going to be able to solo my way into Hell

The whole point of wanting to play hardcore is for the online drama and indirectly social stuff like occasionally checking the leaderboards to see what familiar names are RIP. Hardcore online is a mix of OH SHIT laughs and legit heart attacks.
