I'm really surprised I haven't been blasted for not talking about this yet and I'm probably going to catch shit for my relatively low opinion of it but I can't fairly exclude the N64 beyond this point in my discussion. I'll just start by directly stating my problem with it. There are really only a couple dozen good games for it and everything else is embarrassing trash. I realize this is probably true about the 7800/2600 as well but at least it's cheaper.

You'll end up paying $50 for an N64 because it's wrongly included with the S/NES inflation. You'll also need an expansion pack which is a red thing that sits in that little door on top. If you know to look for it you can probably get an N64 that already has one (the one that comes in it is black) but if you have to add it later don't be surprised if you have to pay out the ass for it.

Speaking of paying out the ass, you'll also do so for the flash cart which, like the NES one is inexplicably expensive. So much so that for how few great games there are, especially if you're someone who only plays specific genres you may be better off getting real cartridges. Although N64 carts are going through some kind of fluctuation most of the good ones can still be had affordably with the exception of Conker.

Also while the controller isn't as unacceptable as some like to say there are definitely better or at least more conventional alternatives. The best is the Hori mini, which seems more like a real controller than the really real controller but they're pretty crazy expensive. The "Super Pad" is another more conventional feeling controller that won't break the bank but it's pretty ugly.

By the time you get a console, expansion pack and either the flash cart or the ten or so real games you're going to play you'll have over $200 in this console. Even though I am critical of the library as a whole, the first and second-party (Rareware) games for it are exemplary.

So, what exactly makes this thing hard to emulate?

Most PS1 and even Saturn games can be emulated with very few issues.

PS2 emulation is fantastic, Gamecube and Wii emulation is getting there, don't think I've ever had trouble emulating a DS game, and now even PSP emulation is making strides.

Is there just no one willing to work on it anymore? I hat

Ok /vr/, I'm about to import a n64 (Euro here).
Can I run NTSC USA games on a jap n64?
Is possible to fix the joystick? If not/too expensive, are there any good chineese controllers?

Thanks.

People are too quick to point to SNES games for having great soundtrack. I think the Nintendo 64 had much better music.

I must aggre, with you on this one. Its very contradiction to your this thread, that there is 20 games that are good on N64, sure there were good once but not so many unfortunately. Most of them were just either crappy port, or lacking in story/game play.
>>1102854 (Next time, thoughts behind it)
Here's my list however, and reason behind it:

1. Starfox 64 (The remake of SNES, launched with N64)
2. Legend of Zelda: OOT. (The first Zelda with 3D, Also an amazing set of Music)
3. Goldeneye 64 (Revolutionized FPS)
4.Super Mario 64 (Launch title, just like Starfox)
5. Super smash bros (Because it was the first brawler/fighting game, with the idea of using "All-stars" from other Games into one collection of them)

P.S: The previous President of Nintendo (Hiroshi Yamauchi) died earlier last week. He became 85 years old, he was responsible for N64 along with other great things, during his serving time with the company.

Hey guys I found an N64 with 4 controllers, 2 memory cards, 4 sports games, some rugrats game, jet force gemini, and a Toy Story 2 game I loved growing up. He offered $30 today but I think I can haggle him down to $25. Do you guys think 25 is a good price?

I just got one of these for the first time. I don't know what games to get for it. I already Goldeneye, Super Mario 64 and OoT. Any suggestions on what I should get? Also, suggestions on places to get them?

Hey /vr/ I'm having trouble with my n64 and I was hoping you could help. When I plug in the AV cables (yellow, red, white) to my TV, it doesn't pick up a signal at all. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thought about posting this in /v/, but then I remember a better board existed!

Just aquired this lovely piece of hardware, and was wondering what games you guys reccoommend for it. Looking for things other than Star Fox, Mario, Etc (the essentials).

Also, where is the best place/site to get games, controllers, and accessories for it?

I see lots of people talking a bunch of ill-informed rubbish about the N64 and its hardware. So here are some interviews with what was arguably the second best 3rd party developer, behind Rareware, Factor 5.

Read and learn, people. This stuff is priceless for settling those N64\PSX\PC Master Race disputes.

::Choice quotes::

The Hardware:
We immediately liked the N64 because we didn't have to deal with CDs.

On N64 Music:
To say it bluntly, in that respect it seems that European and Japanese companies -- with few exceptions -- are simply better. Rare has gathered the cream of the European programming elite, and it's quite visible that they're technically ahead.

Porting Indiana Jones:
The big strength was the N64 cartridge. We use the cartridge almost like normal RAM and are streaming all level data, textures, animations, music, sound and even program code while the game is running. With the final size of the levels and the amount of textures, the RAM of the N64 never would have been even remotely enough to fit any individual level. So the cartridge technology really saved the day.

In terms of weaknesses we fought hard against the fill-rate limitations of the N64. We loved Hi-Res on Rogue because of its crisp look, but the framerate was questionable. So when starting the engines for both Indy and Naboo, the main goal was to get a high framerate in Hi-Res.

PSX vs N64 Music:
You've got these wonderful [PSX] Redbook soundtracks and they all sound professional, but switch off the game and you've forgotten them.

If someone can't handle the N64's sound right, what do they go for? Techno. A techno soundtrack only needs three voices and the problem is that most techno tracks are simply boring and disappointing.

I'm buying a shitload of n64 games on ebay, could you recommend any good titles? Aside from the typical popular ones.
