>SMW can be played everytime,

SMW is the same generic Mario jump and bump game as every other.

>for YI you have to be in the mood.

Touch Fuzzy.
Now you are in the mood.

Nah, I'm pretty sure proper rotation and scaling is totally beyond the Genesis. You could SORT OF do it, but it would be all blocky and jagged, and possibly choppy. A pale imitation of what mode 7 could do.
See: pic related. You are not getting anything as silky smooth as those trees in the background on the Genesis. It just ain't happening.

For reference, the best attempt at mode 7 like effects on the Genesis I have ever seen:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iH_2VXjkS7g&t=35s
A very commendable effort, but it definitely does not look as good as mode 7.

Also, I'm pretty sure Mode 7 is limited to a single background layer. I don't think it can do sprites, or more than one thing at once.
Pic related is here again to save the day. Look at the blocky jagged ground compared to the smooth background. They definitely would have made both look smooth if they could have.
Yoshi's Island even gets to bend the mode 7 rules a bit thanks to the SFX2 chip, and it still had to resort to pig disgusting imitation of scaling for the foreground.

I'm conflicted.

On one hand the sound is worse, they gave Yoshi those annoying noises he makes in later games, the colors are washed out, the resolution is lower, and some of the fancy graphical effects don't work properly. The effect when you touch a fuzzy in particular isn't anywhere near as good looking.

But on the other hand, most of those secret levels are amazing, and I guess it was kinda nice that the game saved your life total.
Endless World of Yoshis is far and away my favorite level in Yoshi's Island.
Runner up would be Fight Toadies with Toadies, another secret level.

If someone made a ROMhack that added the GBA exclusive levels to the original game, I'd just play that.
Actually, does anyone know if that's already been done? I mean, it seems like such an obvious thing.
Same with the e-reader levels from Super Mario Advance 4.
I'd much rather play these hacks than the GBA games if the hacks exist.
