Seconding this. Base J2e is awful and dated. If you're going to play a version based on it, please play J2Evisceration, which fixes most (not all) of its problems: https://www.romhacking.net/translations/2623/
There's also the popular Namingway Edition, but I don't recommend it for two reasons: 1) it's a hack of FFIIUS instead of FFIVJP, so I don't trust the supposed restoration/uncensorship is complete, and 2) the guy inserts stuff in the script that wasn't in 2D versions like the 3D-exclusive "Theodor" sideplot that contradicts/retcons the Super Famicom guide, which isn't everyone's cup of tea. Currently, there is no ideal FFIV English script for SNES; the best localization would probably be the DS version if it had the flowery language dialed back a peg or two, which the PSP resembles but isn't quite it either.

And which fan-translations are these, exactly? The old ones are condensed as hell by and are just as guilty of making shit up as Woolsey was; the new ones are basically just text ports of the rewritten remakes that add a bunch of subjective "QoL" modernization. The closest to getting it right was the Chaos Rush retranslation of the original Final Fantasy, and he's a colossal faggot who split his patch into "D&D" and "canonical" localizations, promised he'd release the tool to fix his shitty choices when he didn't, and text-ported/hacked the sequels. It's literally a lose/lose situation if you wanted the accurate purist experience in English.
