The reason it's so simple is why its so good. People especially today get trapped into thinking that if a game has MORE things you can do it is automatically better. Sometimes adding more just distracts from and waters down the good stuff. PSO works because it's only the good stuff on constant loop and theres no bullshit filler to distract from it. It's why every sequel to PSO has been lame. How do you expand on something that works precisely because it is so compact and efficient?

PSO really had the balls to have one of the most interesting plots in JRPG history and make 90% of it optional or hidden.

I love this game so much. I'm really trying to enjoy PSO2 but it's like comparing The Godfather to The Avengers

While I understand that Monster Hunter was literally based on PSO, I just could never could get into Monster Hunter personally. I haven't really analyzed it, but for some reason I could grind Boomas in PSO forever but I find MH tedious. I never got much into MMOs or other online action games either.

I think what made PSO work was just that it's core gameplay loop, which was exterminating monsters and collecting loot from a drop table, was just so perfectly executed and entertaining. Nothing, not even the PSO sequels, have managed to capture me the same way.

Sometimes I feel like the only one who doesn't put a huge divide in my mind between the classic PS games and PSO1

The classic PS games were my favorite growing up, and after the story concluded in IV I really didn't think we'd get another one. Then Online came out and even though it was more gameplay and action focused, it felt to me like a worthy successor of combing dungeons in PSII. Not to mention that game was super addictive and the story was very beautifully and subtly told.
