You're gonna have to be specific here. Eye-candy and "Super HD ultra gore!!!!" mods like Quake 1.5 use Darkplaces (and very rarely FTE, like Qore apparently) because it supports all sorts of extra lighting effects, plus lots of extra scripting and engine shenanigans to add even more layers on top of the poor id Tech 2 base. Actual gameplay mods and mapsets- Quoth and every map and mod using it as a base, Arcane Dimensions, In The Shadows, basically every func_ Map Jam, etc.- are built for and tested on Fitzquake (or nowadays, one of its descendants: QS/Mark V), the few exceptions being reallllly old stuff that predates these sourceports and had its own ports developed for it, like Nehahra.
