You can also pre-render stuff for moving elements, ergo creating an articulated 3D model of a character or creature and then capturing it in different poses and angles to create animation frames and rotations.

Duke Nukem 3D for instance makes extensive use out of pre-rendered 3D models (designed and sculpted by Chuck Jones), to create monsters, weapons, props and items, even some textures. It also uses a lot of digitized stuff, much of the explosion and fire graphics are sourced from the "Pyromania" effects library, and the shotgun was an actual Winchester 1300 Defender they went and bought for the purpose of putting in the game. They bought the gun used from the Texas Department Of Corrections, then decided to kit out with some new parts to make it look meaner and cooler after it had been criticized as looking bland in a preview.

Much of the 3D models and the digitized stuff had post processing and tweaking done to it as well, and there's also some stuff drawn from scratch. The bloodsplatter and muzzleflashes in this .gif for instance.

Because a lot like Doom, it's actually sci-fi-horror flavored action, only with Duke himself serving as a comic relief, juxtaposed with the grim and dark tone of some levels, creating a good contrast, along with some audacious humor here and there.

As Duke remains a true badass, and he doesn't just quip away the horrors he sees as some sort of narcissistic sociopath (like in Duke Nukem Forever), the tone doesn't get awkward, and this ridiculous superhero remains sympathetic. He is able, he is caring, so even if he's bizarre, you feel confident in his ability to stop the Alien Bastards, and you know he's personally invested in his mission.

Duke Nukem 3D is an excellent example of this:
>pistol is fast, and remains useful for most of the game, but the brief reload prevents it from pretending to be a machinegun

Strafe in and out of cover, popping out to pound a shell in the pig, then step back into cover as you pump the action. Mind also that the shotgun has a really good range, as does the Ripper Chaingun Cannon and pistol.
Also just strafe rapidly, RUN!

You can use it at longer ranges if you have the feel for it. Also it's crazy powerful because it can immediately disable most monsters, further you can instakill them by crushing them under your boot like a cockroach, even a mean monster like the fat commander.
