What? No, Buddy Epsen didn't get cancer, and he wasn't sued either, the studio guys just thought he was faking it until they saw him in the hospital and his nurse told them to GTFO. That's when they realized that they needed to 1, get a new guy to play Tin Man, and 2, figure out how to paint him like shiny metal without poisoning him too.

it was like, aluminum poisoning or something, which probably wasn't a good time, but he got back on his feet after a few weeks of hospital care. Jake Haley, who was hired to replace him (except for the songs, which Epsen had already recorded), did get an eye infection from the new makeup, so he had to stop shooting for a couple of days, but he got better and could finish.

Buddy Ebsen didn't die until 2003, at the age of 95 (outliving Jake Haley), and had done a lot of hit movies and TV shows in his days, so it can't have been that extreme of a poisoning, it clearly didn't cut into his lifespan.
