I can't believe nu-Capcom would sully the good name of Resident Evil by re-releasing the same game over and over with minor changes.

I've never played a Resident Evil game but I want to start with 1. Which is the best version?

What are the definitive versions for the entire Resident Evil series across all ports?

I've never played Resident Evil 1. I have a DS flashcart, the PS original on my PS2 via OPL, the PS original on my Vita via piracy, and the REmake on my Gamecube via swiss. I would like to play it for the first time- but I have decision paralysis. What version should I use for my first playthrough? I am leaning toward the DS version because I enjoy cheesy voice acting but would like some conveniences like the knife being mapped to a dedicated button. Is that dumb? Should I just play the REmake and skip the original?
