It being "good" is probably in the eye of the beholder. The combat isn't very good (or at least, I couldn't find any depth), but as an adventure is super intriguing and unique.
"TAO - The Way" for Famicom, there's an english patch.

Anybody attempted to unravel the plot of this game?

Came to post Tao as well, regarding story.
The gameplay is a bit weird (random encounters that are just basically button mash?), and the game design in general is cryptic as fuck (supposedly on purpose). The fan-translation being awful doesn't help either. But damn the game has a unique and interesting setting and story.

TAO: The way

It's by Pax Softnica (who co-developed Mother with APE).
It's a kind of apocalyptic supernatural/mystical RPG adventure, You're on your quest for enlightenment and facing an imminent end of the world while you travel through buddhist temples to modern day cities to christian cathedrals in other countries. And you travel using dinosaurs, for some reason, although the game is set in 1999.
On your way you solve cryptic puzzles and fight demons, deities and other Megami Tensei-like folk.
It has a fan translation.

Actually this game is supposed to be set in 1999 and it's about a guy named Tao starting an enlightenment journey off a buddhist temple. For some reason, you can travel riding a T-rex or a pterodactyl.
They even included it on the cover art. I wonder if the game manual gave off some sort of explanation about the dinos and how they fitted on the game's world.

Check out TAO for the Famicom.
It kind of has a similar Pokemon/Mother vibe with modern suburbs and countryside towns.
It was also developed by Pax Softnica who also worked on Mother (and not sure if they also worked on the GB Pokemon, but they did Pokemon Snap)

speaking of pax softnica, anyone played this game? called TAO: The Way.

There is an english translation patch, but the game is really really weird and obtuse, and you can't tell if the text is nonsensical because of the translation, or because the original text is also like that.

I got stuck at some point in a temple, should go back and try to finish it.
