I remember my older brother playing Quake in multiplayer, and it blew my mind when he explained that he's playing with real life people over the phone line. This was somewhere in 97-99.
I also remember seeing this advert every time when quitting Douk 3D which was my favorite game at the time, and I got so excited over the idea of playing my favorite game online but I never got to actually play Douk online until 15 years later when I bought the Megaton Edition from steam. The multiplayer is kinda underwhelming because it's so primitive and I've been playing all kinds of online games for years now, but I'm sure I would've enjoyed it back in the days.

Did anyone actually use TEN? Apparently it's some subscription based network gaming service.
I remember seeing this on Duke 3D but I have never in my life met a single person who had subscribed to TEN, and I've been playing Douk since it was released.
I felt that paying extra to play multiplayer was a ridiculous idea.
Null modem cable was the shit, though only handful of games supported that or at least the few games that I owned such as Doom, Heretic, and Duke 3D.
