Its not necessary but it helps to have bigger resolution support. Also you can actually alt tab with the high res patch without the game going berzerk which can be handy.

Troika had an awful run at actual managment of the company and didnt do nearly enough QA testing.
For the sake of ACKSHUALLY and obligatory defence of the game, you dont need to actually go through all of the shitmobs at the end. If you have master prowling you can quite literarly just run past them. You only need to kill that one undead guard at the gates of the void castle.
Also the evil path of the story skips the whole Thanathos segment, so there is less time wasted killing fucking monkies there. You miss out on what happens on the island though.
