Yes you can. That's most of the charm of it. That's what the Bombers' Notebook is for. Every time you play, you make a little progress, then can repeat it and make a little more. It's the horn in The Dark Tower. It's knowing all of Punxsutawney's residents inside and out in Groundhog Day. It is your Link to the Future.

If you do try it to explore on your own, and I suggest you do, play ↓A→↓A→ as soon as you start a new 3day cycle; it thirds time giving you ~1 hour a day, 3 hours total, instead of 10 minutes per 12 hour cycle. The scarecrow in West Clock Town will tell you about this, also, but he's easy to miss and there's no in-game mention of the Song of Time's permutations.

→A↓→A↓: << (rewind, save)
↓A→↓A→: > (play / play at ½ speed)
→→AA↓↓: >> (fast forward)
