The octopus level is overall very easy outside of that one teaching bit. The two truly hard parts in my opinion are the asterite partly because you have to figure out for yourself how to beat it and the vortex queen because almost anything she hits you with is a OHKO which sends you back to the beginning of The Machine which is the only boring and stupid level in the game. It seems super hard at first, but once you memorize where to go so you don't get crushed it's really just a dull time sink. Shame because it's the one true true shit part of an otherwise great game.

It's easily one of my favorite games ever.

I actually think the extra Sega CD levels are among the worst outside of maybe Open Ocean which just feels like easy filler. But what I like about the game is the labyrinthine levels where you have to explore a lot and then keep your patience while singing starfish to break rocks and the like while your air is draining. Also I've never bothered to play the patched CD version so every time was with that music which I find disappointing compared to the original.

I find Tubes of Medusa more annoying than anything other than the machine in Ecco 1 but yeah overall 2 is easier. Even then the first game isn't super hard outside of a few bits and is mostly just about learning to be calm under pressure.

I've beat both multiple times and they're some of my favorite games. Ecco was actually the main reason I got a Genesis in the first place.

I think the controls are sublime and never had real trouble with hit boxes. I can totally understand not liking the main game structure though and much as I love it and love talking about it, Ecco isn't a game I would recommend to everyone.

The last level is an outlier but I went through it all again for the first time in a while a few months back and it wasn't as bad as I remember, mostly just boring relearning the pattern. Vortex Queen is still a fucking pain though that didn't change.

I powered through and kept retrying till I did the vortex queen again which I hadn't done in probably 15 years at least. It was more just to see if I could still do it.

Well that took an obnoxious amount of tries. After going through The Machine 4 times and then getting both eyes out before being eaten I gave in and made a save state for the beginning of the fight. Still took another 5 tries but was worth it. Kinda want to do it for real now but fuck that Machine level
