now without complicating anything: my cable has a 220 cap at pins 16 and 18, like a PAL cable does (though the pinout says 18-20) the ntsc cable should NOT have a cap there.

Does it even matter? the picture looks good on my tv even with that cap there.
Also I've narrowed it down to two pins, either 4 or 18. 18 has a black which matches the PAL gnd, but theres also a gray at pin 4 which onlt matched NTSC as a /possible/ ground pin choice.
