I love the art here because it reminds me of Todd McFarlene's art in the 1990's... too bad this title's absolute garbage to play.

ONE GUY? NO CONTINUES?

>What's the hardest retro clear you've completed /vr/?
Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin on Master System & Game Gear... I mean, it was a 1CC, because it HAD to be, afterall... ONE GUY? NO CONTINUES?

I still haven't finished the last difficulty setting, called Nightmare, which is appropriate, so I'm stuck on the middle one, called Difficult, which is ALSO a appropriate name. I don't mind the way it feels to play overall, Spider-Man controls decently for a 8-Bit title like this, with few buttons on the pad, but... he has SO MUCH knockback, and the many enemies you'll encounter can often feel quite cheap in their behavior, especially because you absolutely CANNOT lose all of your health, EVER. I'd find this title to be alright if you had a lives system in place, or health pickups on levels, instead of a 24min timer that goes down faster when you restore health between levels.

Ah, the Venom suit that everyone loves so much? You know... that iconic suit that even today is a main selling point for Spider-Man video games? It's locked behind Nightmare difficulty. What a joke.

I've managed to do it without save states, except for the hardest difficulty setting, which I can't beat even when using them...

I've been playing through the Master System version of Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin, after enjoying the Genesis version so much I even beat it on Nightmare difficulty with the lowest Stamina and Web settings, on a couple of occasions, though I'll admit there are sections where I still don't know how to get through and it feels like luck when I do it, mostly the end of the penultimate level when Venom shows up, both times I beat it was because he didn't catch up to me for some reason, maybe he got stuck somewhere, I don't know, but still I haven't mastered it yet.

Well, going back to the Master System, this is the most difficult Spider-Man video game I've ever played, I can only beat it on Easy and Difficult with save states, and can't beat Nightmare even with them, and without save states I never go too far, eventually I put in a code for invincibilty so I could play through all of the levels in Nightmare, since it's the only difficulty where you can play with the symbiote suit and it looks stunning for 8-Bit. Still, I know I didn't really beat it legit, neither in the invincibility run nor the save states runs, but I'd like to do it like I did in the Genesis.

What really makes it tough is the structure, no lives, no continues, you can't lose once, and there are no health pickups, nor does your health get replenished at the start of each level, you have to go to Peter's apartment, but that wastes time, and you have 24 hours in game, which in real time is 24 minutes, you can't afford to lose much time at all, and it takes about 15 minutes of in game rest, so 15 seconds, to fill up 10% or your health, and that's on lower difficulties, on Nightmare it only fills up about 5%. You can't lose, you can't get hit, you have to be perfect.

I've played Spider-Man for Master System/Game Gear recently, and I can't beat it no matter what I do, eventually I gave in and used save states to beat it on the easiest and the medium difficulty settings, but the last one is impossible to me even with them, because of the structure, where there are no health pickups and the only way to restore it is going to your apartment, but that takes away time from the time limit, and in the highest setting it takes a long time to restore little health, so it's not viable, you have to play perfect, so I'm giving up, which is a shame since the hardest setting is the only one with the black suit.

However, this experience has made me curious, what are some other titles that give the player only a single attempt? I remember Dick Tracy on the NES the most, because of AVGN's video on it with what felt like his most genuine rage at the end, but at the very least that one had passwords if you managed to progress, so it's something I guess. What are your personal experiences with this design choice and what did you think of it? Have you ever managed to beat something like this without resorting to save states and other cheats? On one hand I'm sad about giving up, but I feel like this is just too much for me really.
