It wasn't, but outside of the PAL countries RGB wasn't generally available on consumer equipment, and even then RGB wasn't standard because it was more expensive as a stock option, you had to buy RGB cables separately. And then a lot of people had really old TVs that only had RF, hence why that was an option for so long.
Stuff like the Sharp SF-1 (pic related) obviously used RGB though.

Because these use LCD screens, and they're built into the actual console so no point in converting the signal to a shittier one.

The rarest thing I've got is one of the controllers in this pic. I got it in a batch of Super Famicom controllers on Yahoo Auctions Japan, only cost about a quarter of what one of these Sharp controllers alone usually costs.
