That's an interesting way of looking at the level for certain.
Valve certainly had a real knack for creating interesting environments and such when it came to Half Life 1.
What really presses me is how each level feels like it has it's own identity, yet it all feels a logical part of the greater facility and even as the whole place is falling apart you can tell how some things functioned, how people would travel through or work there for the most part anyway.
Black Mesa Research Facility is also absolutely massive and I think that most of the personnel basically has to live on-site with vacations in bigger chunks since the infrastructure seems like the size of a small town.
Another thing I enjoyed that I forgot to mention in my writeup was that I liked how they humanize the marines a lot starting from On The Rail. Or like, you start to notice crude messages from Marines and ambushes that actively target Freeman rather than just happening to shoot at you to silence all civilians. I liked eavesdropping on the guys that talk about how all they really care is getting Freeman because he killed their buddies and another soldier complaining about the orders to kill civilians.

I've been playing IF and loving it so far, especially the map design. Glad it's getting an expansion. I suppose one slight gripe is enemy variety and since the game does feature reloading for the SMGs, shotgun and the pistol a counter for how many are in the mag would've been nice but not a huge deal. Also mines / duke pipebomb equivalent would've been nice.

I initially played a bit of the pirated version at my friend's house but we decided to buy the game to support it.

On anudda note since it's blogpost time :
Played some Duke 3d's Duke it out in DC today, specifically Smithsonian Terror. It was really neat how they made it feel like an actual museum within the confines of Duke 3d but unlike the FBI building the level didn't flow very nicely and I ended up doing long repeats of the same hallway over and over until I finally found they way forward from the Ocean Life exhibit. Oh well, still really liked the design.

Also started Shadow Warrior with a sourceport. Even with mouseaim the game feels substantially more disorienting and fiddly than Duke 3d.

Lo Wang voicelines are gold though, like ''you're half the man you used to be''after slicing a guy in half with the katana and the gore effects look hella sick. The uzi sprites also look good.

I have mostly acknowledged that cool Build engine retro shooters where you're like a HECU marine style soldier or a police officer and blow your way through bad guys don't really exist outside of maybe Ion Fury and maybe some mods I don't know about. But what about in early 3d? Like I know Half Life Opposing Force obv but are there others like Half Life OF, Soldier of Fortune 1 and 2 ?
Doesn't need to be exactly like completely real world military themed but like the overall 'feel' would be awesome if close to Opposing Force / Counter Strike [but single player] / Soldier of Fortune.
Unreal 2 is a bit too ''alien'' for me, played Quake 2 and it wasn't quite what I search for.

Guy who was looking for military / cop themed good retro or retro style shooters in the last thread here again :
Thanks for the few suggestions that you guys put out there, I had fallen asleep so I couldn't respond but I did read the thread and while I am slightly disappooted that I either knew or had considered most of the games I do appreciate the replies.

But the search continues, I definitely hope to one day find a game that like nails the feel of being a HECU Marine style soldier in an Ion Fury / DUKE style retro shooter.

What are your top 'modern' retro shooters? I am looking for something like Ion Fury with some amounts of militaryporn like I want to feel something like a HECU grunt or a police officer blasting through bad guys. But it doesn't 100 percent need to be that and I want to hear what you guys like.

I think the respawning is precisely what makes it ''Nightmare'' in a cool, unsettling way. It puts pressure on you to get through the map and not dawdle, otherwise you will get overwhelmed.

Huh, my experience with HECU in both regular HL and Black Mesa seemed to be 'bout the same, I thought they were pretty faithful to the original.
